About the Mission/Story:
Our mission was born from the phrase “I could never”. Families in the disability community are
often told things like “Your child will never be able to walk”, “They will never be able to…” They
are challenged to navigate medical procedures, hospital stays, interrupted services, and the
constant work of advocating for their children or themselves.
And yet, these families demonstrate extraordinary resilience every single day and prove those
limiting beliefs wrong. Inspired by the father/son Hoyt duo, Rick Hoyt used his communication
device to tell his dad, “when we’re running, it feels like I can do anything”.
So what started with my own words of “I could never”, became a realization that so many of the
limits we carry are the ones we have learned to believe. The Run to Breakthrough began with
completing an 85 mile journey across Long Island while pushing adaptive athletes. In 2023 and
2024 we pushed further with 100 mile journeys.
It was less about the running, more about the experience of what it feels like when the words “I
could never” no longer define what’s possible.
So today, Inclusion in Motion brings the belief that limits are only where we place them to life
and gives athletes of all ability levels the opportunity to participate. It is not only a run/walk
event, but an inclusive space where everyone is welcome, all is accessible, and everyone can
see what community really looks and feels like!
In an environment like this, you leave with much more than just the medal and banana because
it’s more than a run. You leave as an advocate for a life without limits.
*All proceeds from the event go directly back to our grant program for families affected by
disability for things not covered by insurance to improve the quality of their lives such as:
services, equipment, home modifications, medications, and car modifications.
About the Event:
Inclusion in Motion is a 6-hour event at Heckscher state park where athletes run or walk as
many 5K loops as they can, up to a full marathon, while having the ability to assist an adaptive
athlete along the course by foot or by push chair.
Aside from being a fully accessible environment for athletes of all ability levels, it will also be a
family friendly day filled with live music, food trucks, family games, raffles, and even a 100 meter
dash to the finish!
Ways to get involved include registering, volunteering, and even coming to just enjoy the day
and celebrate an inclusive community! All funds go directly back to our grant program for
families affected by disability for things not covered by insurance, including services, home
modifications, equipment, medications, etc. to improve the quality of their lives.
